The Riotous Readers meet monthly discussing books that stretch your soul as well as your mind. Last month we discussed Autobiography of an Execution by David Dow, an attorney and director of the Texas Defense Project. Originally, a supporter of the death penalty, Dow has come round to opposing it -- even for the guilty. Our lively discussion included: How do you defend someone you know is guilty? How do you as a Christian address the really heinous crime? Would you, could you, watch a person die? What is our obligation to a murdered person? These difficult questions force us to think, to really think about the death penalty in society.
This month we’re reading The Help, Kathryn Stockett’s phenomenal novel that looks at the life of maids in the deep South of the early 1960s. We meet the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 PM. For more information about how to join us, call the Church office at (732) 671-1905.
The Fabulous Friday Morning Walkers meet at Holmdel Park each Friday at 9:00 AM. We use this time to challenge our bodies as well as our souls as we walk together on kid friendly trails. For more information, call the Church office.
We take time the fist Sunday of every month to explore issues of faith through our Adult Religious Education Programs. Past programs have included learning about the varieties of religious experience in Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam, studying the letters of Paul, and looking at the development of the Gospels and their place in Christian history. In August we will look at the epistle known as 1 Timothy, why it was written, and its importance to us today.
People to People International (pictured) was established in 1956 by President Eisenhower to enhance international understanding and friendship through cultural and humanitarian activities including school kits for third world countries. This past year we sponsored programs on South Africa, the Netherlands, and Christmas in Finland.
Below are some pictures from People to People International gatherings we've hosted at Old First Church.
